Project 52, a new members’ club comprised of 52 members from the local business community, has launched its brand-new bar in Waterloo Lane, St Helier.

The club secured its licence in March this year. Since then a renovation project has been underway to transform the club’s premises into a modern yet nostalgic bar for islanders to relax, socialise and network. The top floor of the club consists of a lounge and meeting room, exclusive to the club’s 52 members. However, unlike most traditional members’ clubs, Project 52 also invites non-members into the downstairs bar and lounge.

The club has been designed by a local design expert who has designed bars across the worldStuart Dryden from Waddington Interiors. Project 52 draws inspiration from the contemporary and industrial, yet homely aesthetics of Soho House clubs. Matt Price and his team from Whittinghams. managed the project to implement the design and turn the club’s vision into a reality. The bar’s menu has been hand-selected by General Manager, Cristian Benta, who has worked in London’s legendary Arts Club, making it very different to any venue that Jersey currently offers.

From January, the 52 members of Project 52 will also have the opportunity to transform the club by hosting a week of their choice. This exclusive privilege comes as part of the club’s membership and is designed for members to share their passions and interests.

Cristian Benta, commented:

“It’s fantastic to finally have the bar open for business. Project 52 prides itself on its individuality and inclusivity so we’ve had a lot of amazing support from members of the local business community and beyond. In terms of the club’s look, vibe and overall conception, it is very different from Jersey’s other members’ clubs in so many ways. Project 52 breaks down traditionalist views, in that its membership is made up of both men and women. We also extend a warm welcome to non-members, taking inspiration from some of London’s more modern establishments in our vision and aesthetic. Now we’ve officially launched, I’m excited to open our doors to the public and see their reactions. I’m also especially looking forward to realising Project 52 members’ ‘dream club’ visions when it comes to the members’ weeks in January.”

Project 52 is a new members club in St Helier comprised of 52 members from the local business community. As a non-traditional member’s club, Project 52 is comprised of both male and female members who each have a chance to ‘takeover’ the bar and make their dream bar a reality for one-week of the year. While upstairs is a members’ only bar for like-minded business people to network and collaborate, the public are also welcome to relax and soak up the atmosphere in the bottom floor bar.

We are currently looking to recruit Full Time and Part Time Waitstaff for Project 52.

New members’ club Project 52 hires top Bar Manager

Project 52, a new members’ club comprised of 52 members from the local business community, has taken a step closer to opening its new bar in St. Helier by appointing Cristian Benta as General Manager of the bar.

In his new role Cristian will help to direct the activities of the bar. His main duties will include managing the day-to-day activities of the bar and making sure the drinks menu is kept up to date with high quality beers, wines and cocktails. He will also work closely with individual Project 52 club members to help transform the venue into their own ‘dream bar’ during their respective weeklong takeover, which comes as part of the club’s membership.

Cristian will be bringing along his own hand-selected team to ensure the bar can cater to the needs of both members and non-members so they will leave saying; “I’m coming here again!”

At 31, Cristian already has an impressive repertoire of fine establishments on his CV. Before coming to Jersey in 2012 he was Bar Supervisor at the legendary Arts Club in London, a highly exclusive venue where celebrities and high rollers go to relax. Since then he has worked in Bar Manager roles in Jersey at The Boat House, Banjo and Wildfire.

 Cristian Benta, commented:

“Working at high-class members’ clubs like The Arts Club has given me a taste of what it takes to make people say ‘Wow!’ when walking into a bar for the first time. This is the feeling that I’d love to help replicate for Jersey with Project 52. My job will be to use my experience, enthusiasm and knowledge to make both members and visitors feel welcome and want to come back for more. While we haven’t yet finalised the club’s drinks list, I can confirm that it will be unlike anything available at other bars and clubs on the Island, featuring a bespoke list of craft beers, fine wines and around 10 classic cocktails, which will utilise the best local ingredients wherever possible.”

Founding Member of Project 52, Olly Mourant, commented:

“We are absolutely delighted to have secured such a talented person to lead our bar team. From the moment we met Cristian it was very clear that he understood our vision for Project 52. Given his background on the Private Members club scene in London and more recently in some of Jersey’s top bars & restaurant, Cris is the ideal person to have on board for our Project 52 journey.”

Project 52 collaborates with local designers to create its new members’ bar

Project 52, a new members’ club comprised of 52 members from the local business community, will realise the vision for its brand new bar in St Helier through a collaboration with local joinery experts, Whittinghams Ltd., and interior designers, Waddington Interiors.

Designers from each company worked closely with the founding members of Project 52 to help focus their vision and create a story that would translate into the look, feel and personality of the bar through finishes, colours and the overall design.

The final design of the bar takes inspiration from the contemporary and industrial yet homely ‘lived in’ aesthetics of Soho House clubs, mixing rustic concrete and scaffold features with rich oily blue and peacock green colouring, copper leafing and pre-worn wooden flooring.

As a non-traditional members’ club, Project 52 welcomes both male and female members and it will reflect this through subtle elements of design that will balance masculinity and femininity to align with the club’s ethos. Unlike most members’ clubs, non-members will also be welcome to relax and drink in the downstairs bar and lounge, however the upstairs snug and meeting area will be open to members only.

Founding Member of Project 52, Oliver Mourant, commented:

“When our members walk into the new bar we want them to have a sense of ownership, getting the look and feel of the bar right was extremely important to us. While we had a vision, translating this into something tangible has be quite difficult, especially when we have such a diverse membership! The designers at Waddington and Whittinghams really understood what we are trying to achieve and their help has been invaluable throughout the design process. I can’t wait to see the finished product!”

Senior Interior Designer at Waddington Interiors, Stuart Dryden, commented:

“Building on the client’s original industrial-style concept it’s important to make sure that the members of Project 52 will feel as though they’re stepping into their ‘home away from home’. Through our use of colour, material and a strong design element, each room of the club will have its own unique identity.”

Owner and Managing Director of Whittinghams Ltd., Matthew Price, commented:

“Project 52’s vision for their premises was clear and I initially thought it would be very challenging to deliver this unique concept within the constraints of time and budget. However, through our close partnership and collaboration with Waddington, we’ve been able to select methods, materials and finishes that meet the budget without compromising on the overall design. I’m looking forward to seeing people’s reaction to this truly unique concept for Jersey.”

Operation renovation

Operation renovation

Operation renovation is in full swing and excitement levels are high!

The past couple of weeks have been really busy down at the club! We had a final walk around with Stuart Dryden; our appointed designer from Waddington Interiors and Matt Price from Whittinghams who has been leading the renovation project. They have done such an amazing job putting all of our ideas into action. It was great to see the final plans and be able to visualise how everything will look. We took a closer look at the final patterns, textures and tiles and are confident these will create a stylish, distressed-chic and comfortable vibe for the club. We can't wait to share the progress with you all!
